Origami lamp shade with paper cranes

I designed and made this origami lamp shade with paper cranes as a commission for someone who wanted an original origami lamp shade for her home. I want to share with you the steps I took to plan and make this beautiful lampshade.

J’ai conçu et fabriqué cet abat-jour en origami avec des grues en papier pour quelqu’un qui voulait un abat-jour original en origami pour chez elle. Je veux partager ici les étapes que j’ai suivies dans le design et la création de ce bel abat-jour.

I worked on this project over a period of several months, refining the design, preparing the different elements, and making the origami lampshade itself. Read on to find out how I worked through each of the steps of this project to create the final origami lampshade!

J’ai travaillé sur ce projet pendant une période de plusieurs mois, sur le design, la préparation des différents éléments, et la fabrication de l’abat-jour lui même. Cet article va décrire toutes ces étapes, pour expliquer les détails de comment j’ai créé cet abat-jour en origami !

I began by talking with my client to find out exactly what she was looking for from the project. Something striking and original, using origami. I looked at many different existing lampshades and origami structures for design inspiration. Pinterest, as usual, was one of my biggest source of ideas! Here is the Pinterest board I made and used for inspiration during this origami lamp shade project:

J’ai commencé par parler avec ma cliente pour découvrir exactement ce qu’elle voulait du projet. Elle cherchait quelque chose de frappant et original, en origami. J’ai regardé plusieurs abat-jours existants ainsi que d’autres structures en origami pour trouver l’inspiration. Pinterest était, comme d’habitude, l’une des plus grandes sources d’idées ! I loved the geometric shapes made by the folded paper in these origami pieces, and the use of bright colours in so many of these projects. Next I needed to decide how to apply these ideas to my own project.

J’adore les formes géométriques qu’on retrouve dans ces structures en origami, et les couleurs vives utilisées dans un grand nombre de ces projets. Ensuite je devais appliquer ces idées à mon propre projet.

After looking at this wealth of different ideas, I began to think about my own design, and came up with several different proposals and sketches. Some of the first ideas were very simple, but others were bigger and more complicated. We wanted the final lamp shade to be large, with several different colours and shapes, and to make a big impression on the room it was finally placed in.

Après avoir regardé toutes ces idées, j’ai commencé à réfléchir à mon propre design d’abat-jour et j’ai fait plusieurs esquisses. Certaines des premières idées étaient très simples, mais d’autres étaient plus grandes et complexes. On voulait que l’abat-jour final soit assez grand avec plusieurs formes et couleurs, et qu’il ait un grand impact dans la pièce où il se trouverait.

Once I had some ideas, I made a few prototypes at a small scale using coloured paper and glue. Using these prototypes, we talked about the different ideas and which we preferred, in order to settle on a final design.

Une fois que j’avais quelques idées, j’ai créé des prototypes à petite échelle avec du papier coloré et de la colle. Avec ces prototypes et esquisses, on a choisi les idées qu’on aimait le plus, afin de s’approcher d’une idée finale.

We worked towards this idea of a basic white origami structure surrounded by coloured hanging origami paper cranes.

Nous avons retenu cette idée d’une structure de base en origami blanche avec des grues colorées en origami suspendues autour.

Although in the end I designed the origami folds myself to fit my design which was based around a metal ring light fitting of 60cm diameter, I first needed to know the basics of how to make a paper folded lamp shade. I found this tutorial on Nostalgie Cat really helpful in explaining the basic ideas, and, in particular, how to treat paper with borax to make it more fire-resistant.

Pour créer la structure de base en origami blanche, j’ai conçu moi même les plis en origami pour créer la forme qu’il fallait pour attacher à une structure d’abat-jour en metal de 60cm de diamètre. Mais avant de le faire, j’avais besoin de comprendre les bases pour créer un abat-jour en origami. J’ai trouvé cet article sur Nostalgie Cat, qui a été très utile pour décrire les étapes à suivre, et surtout comment traiter du papier avec du borax pour le rendre plus résistant au feu.

I purchased some borax from Baldwins which I used treat my paper – two A1 sheets of heavy (180gsm) white paper – in the following way.

J’ai acheté du borax chez Baldwins que j’ai utilisé pour traiter mon papier – deux feuilles de papier (180gsm) blanc – de la façon suivante.

Once I had made several more paper prototypes to design my folds in order to design the required shape to fit around the 60cm diameter metal ring light fitting, I was ready to begin.

Une fois que j’ai fabriqué quelques autres prototypes pour concevoir la forme de la structure de base pour l’adapter à la struture en métal de 60cm, j’étais prête à commencer.

To make my origami lamp shade, I first drew on lines where I wanted to fold the paper, and scored these lines. I folded each sheet of paper, and then glued my two sheets of paper together by overlapping them by one fold at each end to make a tube.

Pour fabriquer l’abat-jour, j’ai d’abord dessiné des lignes sur mes feuilles de papier là où je voulais plier, et je les ai marqués. J’ai plié chaque feuille de papier, puis j’ai collé les deux papiers ensemble en superposant un pli de chaque côté pour faire un cylindre.

I punched holes in each section of the folded paper both at the top and bottom of the tube. I threaded some sting through these holes at the bottom, and pulled it tight to create the shape of the lamp. I then threaded string through the top of the paper structure in the same way, but weaved the string around my metal ring at the same time, to attach the origami shape securely to the light fitting.

J’ai percé des trous dans chaque pli du papier blanc en haut et en bas. J’ai enfilé une ficelle à travers les trous d’en bas, et je l’ai serré pour créer la forme de l’abat-jour. J’ai enfilé une autre ficelle en haut de la même façon, tout en enroulant autour de la structure en metal.

I cut squares of 12,5cm out of each coloured paper and folded these squares into origami paper cranes.

J’ai coupé des carrés de 12.5cm dans les papiers colorés qu’on a choisis, et je les ai pliés en grues origami.

Finally, I threaded fishing line through each of these paper cranes with a needle, and tied them to my lamp shade at regular intervals between he paper folds. I used simple beads made from Fimo in similar colours to my paper cranes to fix the cranes to the fishing wire.

Ensuite, j’ai enfilé le fil de pêche dans chacune des grues en papier avec une aiguille, et je les ai attachées à l’abat-jour entre chaque pli de la structure de base en origami. J’ai utilisé des petites perles toutes simples que j’ai fabriquées avec da la pâte fimo dans des couleurs similaires, pour bloquer les grues sur le fil de pêche.

I was really pleased with how the lamp shade turned out, and I think it looks great with the light shining through the folded paper. Have you ever made an origami lamp shade?
