Screen printing at Techshop

Last year at the Maker Fair Paris, I won a weeks trial at Techshop from OuiareMakers. I chose to try out screen printing at Techshop to make some cool Paris en Rose designs. It took me a while to do it, and even longer to write about it, but here is an account of how it went.

L’année dernière au Maker Fair Paris, j’ai gagné une semaine de découverte à Techshop de OuiareMakers. J’ai choisi de faire de la sérigraphie à Techshop pour faire des jolis motifs Paris en Rose. Ça m’a pris du temps pour le faire, et encore plus pour l’ajouter ici sur le blog, mais voici le compte-rendu de comment c’est passé.

This article isn’t going to be a complete tutorial for screen printing, more a summary of what Techshop is, how it works, and my week spent there. I will explain briefly the technique used and the steps involved for screen printing, but if you are interested in trying it out, you can do your own week trial to follow the course in more detail.

Cette article n’est pas un tutoriel complet de comment faire de la sérigraphie, mais plutôt une sommaire de ce que c’est Techshop, comment ça fonctionne, et comment c’est passé ma semaine là-bas. Je vais aussi décrire la technique qu’on à utilisé et les étapes à prendre pour faire la sérigraphie à Techshop, mais si vous voulez vraiment l’essayer, vous pouvez faire votre propre semaine de découverte pour suivre la formation en plus de détail.

I was really excited to discover Techshop and to have the opportunity to try it out. Techshop is a workshop containing all kinds of tool and machines for creating all kinds of objects (such as tools for woodwork, textiles, metalwork and electronics, laser cutters, printers, 3D printers) as well as a co-working space including a kitchen, workstations with power and wifi, and desktop computers with professional software installed (such as the adobe suite, AutoCAD or CorelDRAW). Access to the workshop is based on a monthly subscription from 50€ – 300€ per month based on the time of the day (mornings, evenings and weekends, or unlimited) and the length of your subscription (12 months, 3 months, or month by month).

J’étais super contente d’avoir découvert Techshop et encore plus d’avoir la chance de l’essayer. Techshop est un atelier collaboratif avec des machines et équipements professionnels qui peuvent être utilisé pour fabriquer toutes sortes d’objets (il y a des outils pour le bois, le textile, la métal et l’électronique, ainsi que les découpeuses laser, des imprimantes, et des imprimantes 3D) ainsi que des espaces de coworking, une cuisine, espaces de conception et des PC équipés des logicielles professionnelles (comme la suite adobe, AutoCAD et CorelDRAW). L’accès à tout est sou forme d’abonnement mensuelle, qui coûte entre 50€ et 300€ par mois en fonction de la période de la journée (matin, soir et weekend ou illimité) et la durée de l’engagement (12 mois, 3 mois, ou sans engagement).

Before using any of the machines, you also need to take a short course to learn how to use them. I had one of these ‘START’ courses included in the free trial period that I won, so I decided to give screen printing a go, since it’s something I had never tried before, but always wanted to.

Avant d’utiliser une machines, il est obligatoire de faire une petite formation pour apprendre à l’utiliser en toute sécurité. J’avais une de ces formations ‘START’ inclus avec ma semaine de découverte, donc j’ai décidé de tester la sérigraphie, vu que c’est quelque chose que j’ai jamais fait, même si j’ai toujours voulu.

I did my START course in August. I was actually the only person doing that START course on that day, so it was just me and the Dream Consultant, Alix, who was super friendly and even gave me a tour of the rest of the workshops. The screen printing course was all really well organised and explained, I was given a small booklet with all the necessary instructions, but we went through the whole process together, step by step, with lots of tips and advice. During the course we printed a design, made this into a screen, and printed the design onto a white t-shirt.

J’ai fait ma formation ‘START’ en Août. Ce jour là, j’étais la seule à faire la formation, donc il n y avait que moi et la Dream Consultant, Alix, qui était super sympa et qui m’a même donné une visite guidé de l’atelier. La formation sérigraphique était très bien organisé et expliqué, j’ai reçu une petit brochure avec toutes les instructions nécessaires, mais nous avons également fait un projet entier, étape par étape, avec beaucoup d’astuces et des conseils. Au cours de la formation, nous avons imprimé un motif, l’attaché à un écran, et imprimé ce motif sur un t-shirt blanc.

The only negative thing about the day was that I arrived without really knowing what to expect from the course, and without having prepared anything. This turned out to be a little frustrating, since we didn’t have much time for the design part of the process, so I ended up just choosing a really basic graphic off the internet, rather than something I would actually want to wear. If I had known in advance exactly what we would be doing, I would have planned a simple design in advance.

Le seule petit point négatif était que je suis arrivé sans savoir à quoi m’attendre du cours, et sans avoir préparé quoi qu’il soit. Cela était un peu frustrant, puisque nous n’avons pas eu beaucoup de temps pour la partie conception du projet, donc j’ai fini par choisir un graphique très basique sur internet, plutôt que que de fabriquer un t-shirt que je voulais vraiment porter. Si j’avais su à l’avance exactement ce que nous allions faire, j’aurais pu prévenir un motif simple à l’avance.

I ended up doing my weeks free trial quite a long time after the START course, in December. This meant a lot of the method wasn’t so fresh in my mind, and it took me a while to back into it. It also took a little while on the first day to process my subscription, so my first day was a little less productive than it could have been! However, in just 3 half days at Techshop during my trial week, I managed to print 50 tote bags, several t-shirts and hoodies, and many more small designs on recycled fabric for Christmas cards.

Finalement, j’ai fait ma semaine de découverte beaucoup plus tard, en décembre. Du coup, je ne me souvenais pas très bien de tout les méthodes et il m’a fallu un peu d’aide pour me rélancer. Il a également pris un peu de temps pour faire mon abonnement, donc mon premier jour n’a été le plus productif ! Par contre, en seulement 3 demi-journées à Techshop pendant ma semaine de découverte, j’ai quand même réussi à imprimer 50 sacs, plusieurs t-shirts et sweats, et pleins de petits motifs sur du tissu recyclé pour les cartes de Noël.

I had learned during my START course that I needed to purchase a screen printing kit (which cost 21€ and contained the fabric for the screen itself, as well as the ‘magic screen’ kit, which is what is used to print the design onto before fusing it to the screen) and some ink (8.90€).

J’avais apris pendant ma formation ‘START’ que il fallait acheter un kit sérigaphie (qui coût 21€, et qui contient le tissu pour faire un écran, et un kit ‘magic screen’, sur lequel on imprime le motif pour coller sur l’écran) et de l’encre (8.90€).

The first step is to print the design(s) onto the special film from the ‘magic screen’ kit. Now that I knew what was needed, I had prepared my designs in advance. The designs need to be printed in black and white only, and need to have not too many very small details. I prepared one large Paris en Rose design, to print onto t-shirts, hoodies and tote bags, and two small designs to print onto recycled fabric for Christmas cards. These 3 designs fitted onto the one A3 ‘magic screen’ that came with the kit.

La première étape est d’imprimer les motifs sur le film du kit ‘magic screen’. Cette fois ci, maintenant que je savais ce qu’il fallait, j’ai pu préparer mes motifs à l’avance. Les motifs doivent être imprimés en noir et blanc, sans trop de petits détails. J’ai préparé un grand motif Paris en Rose, pour imprimer sur des t-shirts, des sweats et des sacs. J’ai aussi fait deux petits motifs à imprimer sur du tissu recyclé pour faire des cartes de Noël. Ces 3 motifs sont rentré sur la feuille A3 fourni avec le kit ‘magic screen’.

Once the design is printed, the film needs to be pressed with the other special sheet from the ‘magic screen’ kit in a hot press. This step is a bit tricky, and we had a little bit of trouble with it during the START course, as it involves peeling the two layer apart while they are both still hot. Once completed, this step leaves you with your printed design on a plastic film, along with a special glue which will later fix the design to the screen.

Une fois que les motifs sont imprimé, le film doit être chauffé avec l’autre feuille blanche du kit ‘magic screen’ dans la presse à chaud. Cette étape est un peu délicat, et nous avons eu un peu de mal à le faire pendant la formation ‘START’, puisque il faut séparer les deux feuilles pendant qu’ils sont encore chaud. Une fois terminé, vous aurez votre motif sur un film en plastique, avec de la colle qui fixera plus tard le motif à l’écran.

The next step is to make up the frame, with the tools and information provided.

Ensuite, il faut monter le cadre, avec les outils et les informations fournis.

Then you need to decide where on the frame you need to stick you design. This will depend on what you are printing. I optimised the placement of my Paris en Rose design on the screen for printing tote bags, for example. But when I tried to use it to print t-shirts it was less conveniently placed. The hot press is used again for this step.

Maintenant, il faut décider où sur le cadre vous aller coller votre motif. Cela dépendra de ce que vous voulez imprimer. Par exemple, j’ai optimisé le placement du motif Paris en Rose pour l’impression des sacs, mais quand j’ai imprimé des t-shirts c’était moin bien placé, donc plus difficile à faire. La presse à chaud est utilisée à nouveau pour cette étape.

Then the screen needs to be taped up so there are absolutely no gaps anywhere, including around the edges, except for where your designs are. I also added a slightly raised edge made with tape and rolled up paper, to separate each design, since I was going to use different coloured inks. The screen then is attached to the printing press, and adjusted so it is level, and the correct distance from the base.

Ensuite, il faut combler toutes l’écran autour des motifs. Il faut boucher tout les trous et les bords pour que l’écran entier soit étanche. Du coup, l’encre passe seulement la ou il y a votre motif. J’ai également ajouté une ligne surélevé en scotch et en papier pour séparer chaque motif, puisque je voulais utiliser des encres des couleurs différentes. L’écran est ensuite installé sur la jeannette, et bien réglé pour qu’il soit droit et à la bonne hauteur.

Then you are ready to print the designs. For the tote bags, the bag is placed around the base, and stuck to the surface with temporary spray glue so it doesn’t move. The ink is placed on the screen and passed through the screen with a squeegee. This took a bit of practising to get the technique right. And it is important that the press is adjusted correctly too. I was lucky enough to get some help from another Techshop member who showed me how important it was to evenly spread the ink over the design before each print.

Et c’est enfin le moment de faire des impressions. Pour imprimer les sacs, ils sont placé autour de la jeannette, et collé avec la colle en spray temporaire pour qu’il ne se déplace pas. L’encre est placée sur l’écran et une raclette est utilisé pour à faire traverser de l’encre. C’était un peu difficile à trouver la bonne technique, et il est important que la jeannette soit bien ajustée. J’ai eu de l’aide d’un autre membre Techshop qui m’a montré comment napper l’encre sur l’écran avant chaque impression.

The final step is to cure the Ink in the conveyor dryer. This heats the ink up to around 180° which makes it durable and washable.

La dernière étape est de sécher l’encre dans le tunnel de séchage. L’encre est chauffé jusqu’à environ 180 ° pour fixer l’encre et le rendre lavable.

And that’s it. I was really pleased with all of my screen printed creations, and would love to do more screen printing at Techshop in the future. I especially love my Paris en Rose bags, and the Christmas cards, which are available on my Etsy shop. Get 15 % off with the code JAN2017SALE!
