Recycled notebooks made with scrap printer paper

I ran a workshop with last weekend at the Maker Fair Paris to make these recycled notebooks. They are made using recycled printer paper that has only been printed on one side. The paper is folded with the blank side on the outside and bound together using a Japanese stab binding technique. You can download the instruction sheet (it’s only in French for the moment, sorry!) or follow the tutorial below.

J’ai animé un atelier le week-end dernier au Maker Fair Paris pour faire ces carnets recyclés. Ils sont fabriqués avec du papier d’imprimante brouillon A4, imprimé sur un seul côté. Le papier est plié avec le côté vierge à l’extérieur et relié ensemble avec une technique de reliure japonais. Vous pouvez télécharger la fiche d’instructions ou suivre le tutoriel ci-dessous.

For this particular notebook, we are using sheets of scrap paper. The paper is printed on one side only, so it will be folded in half, with the printed side on the inside. We will bind the opposite side to the fold.The notebook will therefore be sized A5 portrait.

Pour ce projet, on va utiliser du papier A4 recyclé. Le papier est imprimé sur un seul coté, donc il va être plié en deux, avec le côté imprimé à l’intérieur. On va le relier du côté opposé du pli, donc notre carnet va être taille A5, portrait.

You need to prepare your pages, by folding and lining them up. For a small notebook, start with between 15 and 20 sheets. You can also add sheets of other paper or materials, such as envelopes, patterned paper, tabs or pocket.

Il faut préparer des pages. Pour un petit carnet, utiliser entre 15 et 20 feuilles. On peut également ajouter quelques autre feuilles de matériaux différents, des enveloppes, du papier, des onglets, des poches etc.

For the cover of your notebook, you need two pieces the same size as the other pages. You can use whatever you like (for example, plastic, card or paper) but ideally it should be thicker than the inside pages. You can decorate this cover however you like.

Pour la couverture il faut deux morceaux de la même taille que les autre pages. On peut utiliser le matériel qu’on veut (par exemple, du carton, du papier ou du plastique) mais idéalement il faut qu’il soit un peu plus épais que les feuilles de papier. Décorer la couverture comme vous le souhaitez.

To make an even thicker cover, you can cover a piece of cardboard with the material of your choice. For example, a plastic or paper bag, patterned paper or fabric.

Pour avoir une couverture encore plus rigide, on peut couvrir un morceau de carton avec le matériel de votre choix. Par exemple, un sac plastique, du papier, du tissu etc.

Before making the holes, make sure that all of the pages are in the right order, with the fold on the outside. You need to make 5 holes with the awl. Pierce just a few pages at a time, and use a template to make sure all the holes line up.

Avant de percer les trous il faut vérifier que toutes vos pages sont dans le bon sens. On va faire 5 trous du coté opposé des plis, avec un poinçon. Ne percer que quelques feuilles à la fois, et utiliser un patron pour vérifier qu’ils sont tous au même endroit.

To measure the string, wrap it around the part of the notebook you are going to bind 6 times. Start sewing in the middle, leaving about 10-15cm of string. Start by moving towards the bottom of the notebook, passing the string around all of the pages at the spine at each hole. Once you reach the bottom, pass the string around all the pages at the bottom of the notebook too, and then sew back towards the middle, passing by the previously unsewn sections. Sew the other half of the notebook in the same way.

Pour mesurer le fil, il faut l’enrouler 6 fois autour de la partie à relier. Commencer au milieu. Passer vers le bas du cahier, en faisant le tour de toutes les pages à chaque trou. Quand vous arrivez en bas, faites le tour de toutes les pages en bas également, et repasser vers le point de départ, en passant par les espaces vides. Coudre le haut du carnet de la même façon.

Once you have finished, tie a small knot. To finish you can either thread the excess string inside the notebook and cut it off, leave a pretty bow on the front of the notebook, or leave a long string to close the notebook with.

Quand vous avez terminé, vous pouvez faire un nœud sur le devant de votre carnet, faire rentrer les fils à l’intérieur pour qu’ils ne se voient pas ou laisser un long fil pour fermer le carnet.

And that’s it. Go ahead and make as many different recycled notebooks as you like for your notes, sketches, lists or poetry. You can use the same technique for different sized notebooks, or try experimenting with different materials or colours to make interesting designs.

Et c’est tout. Maintenant vous pouvez faire autant de carnets recyclés que vous voulez pour des notes, des croquis, des listes ou de la poésie. Vous pouvez utiliser la même technique pour faire des carnets de différents tailles, ou vous pouvez expérimenter avec des types de matériaux et des couleurs pour faire des carnets variés et intéressants.
