Plastic bag crochet

After learning to crochet, I decided to try making a washing basket out of some old plastic bags. Here is how it went…

I used a similar technique to cut the plastic bags into yarn as I described in my article about making t-shirt yarn, and simply crocheted it all up into a big oval basket. It took A LOT of bags to finish this one!

J’ai utilisé la même technique pour couper les sacs en plastique que j’ai décrit dans l’article Comment fabriquer du fil de t-shirt, et j’ai simplement crocheté le fil dans un grand panier ovale. Il m’a fallu BEAUCOUP de sacs en plastique pour le terminer !

I used all kinds of plastic bags – of different colours, sizes, shapes and thicknesses – and so I tried to adjust the width of the yarn to the thickness of the plastic bag to try and give a yarn of a relatively consistant thickness. However, although this technique worked to some degree, there was such a large difference between some of the bags that I still ended up with a yarn of a very variable weight.

J’ai utilisé toutes sortes de sacs en plastique – de différentes couleurs, tailles, formes et épaisseurs – et j’ai essayé de couper la largeur de la bande en fonctionne de l’épaisseur du sac plastique pour avoir un fil final d’un poids relativement constant. Mais même si cette technique a marché jusqu’à un certain point, il y avait une grande différence d’épaisseur entre certains sacs donc j’ai quand même fini avec un fil d’un poids très variable.

I did a bit of reasearch, I found a technique that would work quite well for the thinner bags, as It uses a double thickness of the plastic. However, for thicker bags, I would stick with the t-shirt yarn technique. Here are some quick instructions on how to do it:

J’ai fait un peu de recherche, j’ai trouvé une technique qui fonctionnera très bien pour les sacs très fins, puisque il utilise une double épaisseur de plastique. Cependant, pour des sacs plus épais, je garderais la même technique que pour le fil de t-shirt. Voici quelques instructions sur comment faire :

1. Get a bag

1. Trovez un sac en plastique

2. Cut off top and bottom to leave a tube

2. Coupez le haut et le bas du sac pour laisser un tube

3. Cut the tube into strips, leaving a row of seperate rings

3. Coupez le tube en bandes, en laissant une série d’anneaux

4. Attatch these rings by looping them together. Put one end of one ring through one of the other rings

4. Attachez ces anneaux en les bouclant ensemble. Mettre une extrémité d’un anneau à travers l’un des autres anneaux

5. Put one end of this ring back through the other end of the same ring

6. Pull tight and continue to make a continuous string of yarn

My basket turned out pretty well, it seems sturdy, but is a little bit floppy. If I did it again, I would try and make a slightly smaller one, or try and give it a bit more strength by doubling up and/or using thicker yarn.

Mon panier est plutôt bien réussi. Il semble être robuste, mais est un peu trop souple. Si jamais je refais un autre, je le ferais un peu plus petit, et j’essaierais de lui donner un peu plus de rigidité en doublant le fil ou en utilisant un fil plus épais.

I thought the plastic was the perfect material for a washing basket, which often contains damp clothes. Even though the plastic bag crochet doesn’t give the cosiest finish, there must be many other practical uses for it: A rug/mat, a bag for the beach, a raincoat, a hat… the possibilities are endless!

Je trouvais que le plastique est un matériau parfait pour un panier à linge, qui contient souvent des vêtements humides. Même si le crochet en sacs en plastique ne donne une finition super chaleureuse, il y a plein d’utilisations pratiques : un tapis, un sac de plage, un imperméable, un chapeau… les possibilités sont infinies !
