These lace spray painted china cake stand and tea cups are made by using lace as a stencil
Give new life to some old crockery by turning them into this lace spray painted china. Make a cake stand by spray painting several pieces and gluing them together. The lace pattern is created by using a piece of real lace as a stencil.
This project is part of the DIY déco challenge with Oui are Makers and Edding France to create a decorative object using spray paints. I love the way these paints really transform these old plates. If you have some old fashioned, ugly, chipped or cracked pieces of crockery, or simply want a change of colour scheme, this project is perfect.
To complete this project you will need:
- crockery – for a cake stand, use a minimum of one plate and one glass or mug to stand it on, but get creative with your layers. Use candle sticks, glasses, mugs, saucers, plates, bowls and more! I picked up a few pieces at the recyclerie la petite roquette for just a few euros.
- lace – I found some old net curtains on the street for free
- glue – I used this invisible epoxy glue
- spray paints – I used Edding Acrylic Colour Paint in cream white, petrol, coral, and pastel yellow, as well as the clear lacquer glossy varnish to finish.
You only really need two colours of paint, but I tried several bright primary colours against a cream white base. I found the cream white worked best against the darkest colour : petrol blue. So when choosing your colours make sure you have a high contrast between them.
To begin, clean your crockery and make sure it is perfectly dry before painting.
Then you need to find a place to paint. Make sure you only use the spray paints in a place with good ventilation. Outside is great, if you have somewhere appropriate, and the weather allows for it. This wasn’t possible for me, so I built a protected corner with recycled cardboard boxes and newspapers.
I began by spraying all of the plates and cups cream white. I did several light coats over each side of the plates and saucers, and on the outside of the cups.
I then cut pieces of lace to the size of my plates, ready to use as a stencil for the spray paints.
Next, lay the lace on the plates. Ideally, the lace should be touching the surface of the plate in all areas, but this will be difficult to do if your plates have a lip. Just make sure the lace is as flat as possible against the plate.
Now you are ready to spray your coloured paint over the lace. I did only one coat, since once you move the lace, you can not put it back again in exactly the same place. So make sure to cover the plate well with the spray paint before lifting off the lace.
If you are making tea cups, you can do the saucers in the same way as the plates, but the cups are a bit more tricky. I wrapped the lace around the cups and held it in my hand while spraying. Once this first coat was dry, I then used a more precise nozzle to spray just the handle of the cup in the same coloured paint.
Once the coloured paint has dried, you can glue the pieces together to create a cake stand. I used this epoxy glue which needed mixing together, before applying to the top and bottom of my glass and plates to glue them together.
Leave the glue to set thoroughly. Then you can add a coat of varnish to the whole thing to finish. I used Edding clear glossy varnish on all the cups and the stand.
Even with the varnished finish, I am not 100% sure of the safety of the plates and cups to eat and drink off. The cake stand could be used for cupcakes with a paper case, or with a paper doily, or you could use it to store jewellery or other items in a bathroom or on a dressing table. The cups could also be used to contain small items, to plant beautiful succulents, or you could even try making them into candles.
