Slippers and phone cases made by felting with recycled wool insulation
Take a look at these slippers and phone cases that were made by felting with recycled wool insulation. Also, come along to my felting workshop on the 15th December to give this felting technique a try!
I was given this wool insulation by a friend, who thought I would be able to make something with it.
The insulation came in two colours: a light cream colour (sorry, it’s not in the photo) and a darker brown/grey colour which you can see in the photo. The cream coloured wool had a lot more in common with the raw wool I buy ready for felting from Pain d’Épices. It had long clean fibres, and was soft and white. The darker one was much rougher, with shorter, denser fibres. I decided to try using both for felting anyway. Here are the results:
These slippers were made using an inner layer of the darker wool, and an outer layer of the cleaner, whiter wool. Read my previous article, Hand felted slippers, to learn how to complete the project. I put a layer of darker felt on the bottom of the slippers, so the dirt won’t show so much, and sewed 3 mother of pearl buttons onto each slipper for decoration.
We also made several felted phone cases in the same way. With the recycled wool, but also with some coloured wool to make decorative patterns. These phone cases are made around a rectangular template (we used cardboard) about 30% bigger than your phone. The wool is felted around the card, leaving an opening at the top. Then the card is slipped out and the wool felted further to reach the required size.
This is the case I made in the same style as the slippers, with an inner layer of brown and an outer layer of cream. A button and a piece of recycled ribbon is used to close it.
What do you think of this project? Would you like to give it a try? I am running a short workshop on the 15th December in Paris, so come along to make your own phone, tablet or small laptop case, using coloured wool. The perfect handmade gift for Christmas!
